Exploring the varied ways drums define music. Early innovators and leaders from the point of rhythm such as Art Blakey showed how the drums could lead from the front. The importance of groove was established by drummers like Clyde Stubblefield of the JBs, and Gregory C Coleman of the Winstons, both opening the door for innovators like Bernard Purdie to shape sounds as diverse as Gil Scott Heron, Todd Rungdren, Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan
Then the machines showed up.
An array of acronyms and alphanumeric 808s, SP1200s and MPCs arrived, and the ability to step edit and individually tailor drum sounds per hit brought deconstructued grooves, and the sampling of flourishes brought yet more prominence to the drummer. The culture of digging, and the use of triggers and electronic drums brought the technology and the players closer together, ensuring that today, a bandleading drummer such as Questlove is in charge of the house band on the number 1 late night talk show in the states, the new revival of UK jazz has Moses Boyd and his various projects to the fore, and players as diverse as Kamasi Washington and Beyonce see and hear the value to having two drummers as part of their touring outfit to cover the range and expression of groove.
